WHERE DO YOU GARDEN?

Find your growing season

Your hardiness zone tells you how cold your winters get. That matters for trees and shrubs that stay in the ground all year. Most of the veg, herbs and flowers in this box only need one season: you sow after the last spring frost and harvest before the first one in autumn. Across the UK that window runs from about April to October, a little shorter in the north and on high ground.

Zone 7

HIGHLANDS AND HIGH GROUND

Frosts can last into late May. Start with quick growers like radishes, lettuce and peas, and start tomatoes and squash indoors until the frost is over.
Zone 8

SCOTLAND, THE NORTH AND WALES

A full season from mid-May. Room for almost everything in the box, with tender crops planted out once the nights warm up.
Zone 9

MIDLANDS AND THE SOUTH

Sow from April and plant twice: a spring garden, then a second round of fast crops for an autumn harvest.
Zone 10

MILD COASTS

Cornwall, the Scillies and sheltered coasts rarely freeze. Grow salads and herbs well into winter, and start the heat-lovers early.

5 packets of tree seeds (about 150 seeds in total): Carob, Norway Spruce, Pink Silk Tree, Mimosa (Silver Wattle) and Judas Tree. You also get 10 biodegradable pots, 7 growing pellets, 5 bamboo plant markers, a 3-in-1 soil meter (pH, moisture and light), pruning scissors, 3 mini garden tools, 2 zip-lock bags and printed bonsai instructions, all in a wooden seed box.

Yes, most of them. Carob, Pink Silk Tree, Mimosa and Judas Tree have hard seed coats: pour hot water (just off the boil) over them and leave them to soak overnight, until they swell. Judas Tree also needs a cold spell after soaking: put the seeds in damp compost in a zip-lock bag in the fridge for about 6 to 8 weeks before sowing.

Norway Spruce often sprouts without treatment, but 3 to 4 weeks in the fridge first can help. The instructions in the Growli app cover each tree.

Start them all indoors. After that, it depends on the tree. Norway Spruce and Judas Tree are hardy outdoor trees: once established they do best outside all year, as they need a cold winter. Carob and Mimosa don’t like frost, so keep them on a bright windowsill or in a conservatory over winter and move them outside in summer. Young Pink Silk Trees also need shelter from frost in their first winters.

Tree seeds are slow: some sprout in two or three weeks, others take months, so give them time. To keep mould away, use fresh compost or the pellets, keep them moist but never wet, and give the pots some air rather than sealing them in. Remove any mouldy seeds straight away.
